Virtual numbers for WhatsApp: what works and what doesn’t

Last verified September 2026

Spun doesn’t offer a virtual number.

Spun does not sell or provide phone numbers or verification codes. It works with a WhatsApp number you already run on a phone, connected through the same QR scan as WhatsApp Web. If you still need a number, this guide explains which kinds work.

WhatsApp works on virtual numbers you genuinely control, including real mobile numbers, eSIMs, some VoIP numbers and landlines verified through the call option. Free SMS sites and temporary or shared numbers usually fail or get banned, because anyone can request a code for them and WhatsApp bans those ranges heavily.

A virtual number is a phone number that is not tied to a physical SIM card in your phone: it lives with a VoIP provider, an eSIM service, or a virtual carrier, and forwards calls or texts to wherever you are. People want one for WhatsApp for good reasons: a separate business line, keeping a personal number private, or a local presence in another country.

WhatsApp allows any number you genuinely control, but its verification and anti-abuse systems treat number types very differently. This guide covers what reliably works, what usually fails, what gets accounts banned, and how to do it properly if you decide to. If the real goal is WhatsApp Business with multiple users, a second number is not needed: Spun is a shared WhatsApp inbox on your own WhatsApp number, and it does not provide phone numbers or verification codes.

How WhatsApp verifies a number

WhatsApp does not care whether a SIM is in your phone. It cares that you can receive a one-time code at the number you are registering: by SMS, or by the "Call me" voice option. Once verified, the number is your account identity; the SIM (if any) can go in a drawer.

The catch is that verification is also where WhatsApp filters abuse. Ranges known to belong to disposable or heavily abused VoIP services often cannot receive the code at all, or verify and then trip a ban shortly after. That, not any official "no virtual numbers" rule, is why experiences differ so much between providers.

What reliably works

  • A real mobile number you control: a second SIM, a dual-SIM phone, or a cheap prepaid SIM used once for verification. This is the gold standard and never fights the anti-abuse systems.
  • eSIM services that issue genuine mobile numbers: because the number is a normal mobile allocation, WhatsApp treats it like any SIM.
  • Established VoIP numbers with real SMS capability: Google Voice, for example, has a long track record of verifying WhatsApp for US users. It works because the numbers are personal, long-lived and rarely recycled.
  • Landline numbers, via the voice option: WhatsApp Business supports verifying a landline by choosing "Call me" and typing the code the robocall reads out. This is how many shops put their existing fixed line on WhatsApp.

What fails or gets you banned

  • Free receive-SMS websites: these publish a shared number that anyone on the internet can read codes for. If it verifies at all, anyone else can re-verify the same number and take the account, and WhatsApp bans these ranges aggressively.
  • Temporary or disposable number apps: the number expires or gets recycled, and whoever receives it next can re-register your WhatsApp identity. Everything you built on that account is one recycled allocation away from being someone else’s.
  • Bulk or cheap VoIP ranges: many verify and then hit a ban within days, because the surrounding range is full of spam registrations. You did nothing wrong; the neighborhood did.
  • Numbers you do not control long-term: WhatsApp periodically re-verifies, and losing access to the number can mean losing the account, especially combined with a forgotten two-step PIN.

One rule covers all of it: if you cannot guarantee you will still control the number in two years, do not build a WhatsApp identity on it.

Setting up WhatsApp on a virtual number, properly

  1. 1

Pick a number you own indefinitely

A paid, dedicated number from a reputable provider, an eSIM with a real mobile allocation, or a spare SIM. Avoid anything marketed as temporary.

  2. 2

Verify by SMS or the call option

Install WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business, enter the number, and receive the code by SMS, or wait for the SMS timer to expire and choose "Call me" for a voice code (the route for landlines).

  3. 3

    Turn on two-step verification immediately

Settings, Account, Two-step verification. This PIN is what stands between a recycled or hijacked number and your account.

  4. 4

    Keep the number alive

Pay the provider, keep the line active, and keep access to it. Re-verification lands on that number, not on your phone.

Often the better question: do you need a second number at all?

Many people reach for a virtual number because several teammates need to answer one WhatsApp, or because they want business messaging separated from a personal phone. A second number is one answer; putting proper team tooling on the existing business number is often the simpler one, since customers already know it and nothing needs re-verifying. Spun does exactly this on the number you already have: every teammate gets a login, and each one can be limited to the customers they handle.

If the goal is a genuinely separate second line, a dual-SIM phone running WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business side by side (each app on its own number) remains the most robust zero-drama setup.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use WhatsApp without a SIM card?

Yes. WhatsApp needs a number that can receive a one-time code, not a SIM in the phone. Verify with any number you control (including a landline via the call option), and afterwards the SIM can be removed or the number can live entirely with a VoIP or eSIM provider.

Are free virtual numbers safe for WhatsApp?

No. Free receive-SMS numbers are public and shared: anyone can request a code for the same number and take over the account, and WhatsApp bans those ranges heavily. For anything you care about, they are the worst available option.

Does Google Voice work with WhatsApp?

For US users it has a long track record of working, because Google Voice numbers are personal, long-lived and rarely recycled. As with any non-SIM number, verify by SMS or call and enable two-step verification.

Can I put my landline on WhatsApp?

Yes. Register the landline in WhatsApp Business, let the SMS timer expire, then choose the "Call me" option and type in the code from the automated call.

Why was my account banned right after verifying a virtual number?

Most likely the number came from a range associated with abuse. WhatsApp’s systems score ranges, not individuals, so cheap bulk VoIP allocations often verify and then trip an automated ban. A dedicated number from a reputable provider avoids this.

What happens if my virtual number provider shuts down?

If you can no longer receive codes at the number, you cannot re-verify, and the account is effectively unrecoverable once WhatsApp asks for re-verification. This is why the provider’s longevity matters as much as the price.

Can several people answer one WhatsApp number?

Yes, without a second number. Spun is a shared WhatsApp inbox that connects on your own WhatsApp number as a linked device, like WhatsApp Web, so it needs no Business API and charges no per-message fees. Each teammate gets their own login, so several people answer at once and each one can be limited to specific conversations or customers.

Already using WhatsApp for your business? Share it with your team.

Spun does not provide phone numbers or verification codes. It connects to the WhatsApp account you already run on a phone, through the same QR scan as WhatsApp Web, and gives each teammate their own login, limited to the customers they handle. If you do not have that number yet, a trial will not create one.
